Crumb rubber is generally manufactured from automotive
and truck scrap tires. During the manufacturing process
steel and fluff is removed leaving tire rubber with a granular
consistency. Continued processing with a granulator, cracker
mill, possibly with the aid of cryogenics, reduces the size
of the particles further. The particles are sized and classified
based on various criteria including color (black only or
black and white), magnetically separated, and removal of
fluff. The granulate is sized based on a passing through
a screen with a size based on a dimension (1/4") or
mesh (10, 20, etc.)
EPDM rubber (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) is
an elastomer which is characterized by wide range of applications.
EPDM rubber is used in vibrators and seals; glass-run channel;
radiator, garden and appliance hose; tubing; washers; belts;
and electrical insulation. It is also used as a medium for
water resistance in high-voltage polymeric cable jointing
installations, roofing membrane, geomembranes, rubber mechanical
goods, plastic impact modification, thermoplastic, vulcanizates,
as a motor oil additive, pond liner, electrical cable-jointing
and chainmaille applications.
EPDM exhibits satisfactory compatibility with fireproof
hydraulic fluids, ketones, hot and cold water, and alkalis,
and unsatisfactory compatibility with most oils, gasoline,
kerosene, aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, halogenated
solvents, and concentrated acids.
